Empty buildings don’t provide solutions for homeless if they are not offered. We propose that Homeland Security provide some security to those without a home.

How? Perhaps re-target resources to NPOs that can work to fill empty houses and buildings with people who need homes.

Sounds simple? It really is.

The New York Times front-paged an article on the crisis today, and it is a decent read.

Homelessness brought about by foreclosures wasn’t even a blip on the charts when Push Open Doors started. Sadly, that curve has now shown the fastest growth of any sector.

One commenter offered: “Can anyone look at the deteriorating, looted, graffiti-covered empty houses owned by the banks and tell me our society, or the vaunted free market, is well served by this heap of waste?”

Our sentiments, exactly.

Push Open Doors is a national non-profit dedicated to providing help for the Homeless. We’ve been around since 2003, when homelessness was somewhat less urgent than it is now.

We are excited to be able to show you what we can do – with your help – to rid America of the scourge of homelessness.

We serve as an intermediary between Funding Partners, who provide the funds and Housing Partners, who provide direct assistance to the Homeless.

We take no money from our Housing Partner programs whatsoever.

All of the time it takes to do our work is donated by generous and helpful volunteers.

To help keep us going, we ask for a separate gift for things such as telephone and server costs. Those costs are small, and typically amount to a couple hundred dollars a month.

Please read through our pages to see all the good that can be done with just small contributions from many people.
